Glenis Campbell, a 59-year-old Memphis man, is facing multiple charges for posing as a lawyer and defrauding several clients out of nearly $40,000. Campbell was arrested on Thursday after a series of investigations by the police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Campbell’s fraudulent scheme began in December of 2021, when he convinced a married couple that he could help them with a workman’s compensation case. The couple paid him around $28,000 over almost two years for various legal fees and expenses, but Campbell never provided any proof of his work or credentials. The couple eventually realized that Campbell was not a licensed attorney in Tennessee and reported him to the authorities.
In July of 2022, Campbell duped two sisters who wanted to file a wrongful death lawsuit for their mother. He asked them for money to cover court costs, legal fees, and other charges, totaling about $7,600. However, he never filed the lawsuit or returned their money. The sisters also discovered that Campbell was not a real lawyer and alerted the police.
In October of 2023, Campbell’s scam came to light again when a Memphis man hired him to represent him in a criminal case in Mississippi. The man paid Campbell $3,240 for his services, but Campbell cut off all contact with him as the court date approached. The man checked the Mississippi Bar’s website and found out that Campbell was not listed as a lawyer. He then contacted the police and filed a complaint.
Campbell had a prior record of impersonating a lawyer in 2008. He was arrested on three active warrants for impersonating a licensed professional and several counts of property theft. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday morning. No bond information is available at this time.
